SIMI VALLEY, CA: One of the most recognized names in world-class sound effects, Frank Serafine www.frankserafine.com has redefined the art of the SFX library once again with a much-anticipated 6-DVD, royalty-free expansion for The Serafine Collection. His already devoted user base, as well as the next generation of visual media producers will now benefit from his most advanced collections yet, covering the categories of Foley, Human/Animal, Industrial, Sci Fi II, Vehicles, & Water.
The new DVDs represent Serafine’s ongoing pursuit for SFX perfection in terms of sound quality, comprehensiveness and database-friendly functionality. “These new libraries are the missing link,” Serafine says. “There are holes in every sound library collection, and my ongoing work on feature films constantly reveals to me exactly what SFX collections are still needed. From there, it becomes my mission to fill those holes.” A pioneering sound designer and composer who first captured attention with his contributions to classics like Star Trek and Tron, Serafine’s work has since been integral to the soundtracks of hundreds of feature films, commercials (Dodge, Microsoft, Sony), TV shows (“American Idol”, “Baywatch”), video games (Grand Theft Auto III, Wing Commander IV), theme parks (Busch Gardens, Six Flags) and beyond. His first SFX library for L2, “Platinum Sounds for the 21st Century”, stands as one of the most successful SFX collections of all time. Serafine’s philosophy of creating highly useful, as-yet unaddressed soundsets is exemplified in a group of “Boat yacht” entries of motor revs, side deck waves, and engines in the “Vehicles” collection. “For a feature I was working on, we needed yacht sounds, but there were none to be found in the Soundminer database,” says Serafine, referring to the widely used audio content management system. “So the movie’s director rented the nicest yacht in Marian Del Rey, and I oversaw a team of nine engineers recording the craft from every angle. The result is the premiere yacht SFX collection.”
Similarly, Serafine kept his radar up as he received custom orders for sounds from trains, emergency vehicles, police car drive-bys, and even semi-quiet city soundscapes. “The most sought-after ambient sound is actually distant, urban ambiance,” he remarks. “You can always add in more birds or dogs, but it’s hard to find extremely quiet urban scenes.” All sounds were recorded with Serafine’s trademark expert attention to realistic sound quality, using the latest available technology to capture sources in gradients from pristine to raw, as appropriate. “SFX recording is a totally different animal from music recording,” says Serafine. “My experience as a sound recordist taught me to record sources in the way you want the ear to hear it – while the fidelity is extremely high, they don’t necessarily sound perfect, just correct. That’s what makes these SFX truly useful to the sound and video editors that will be applying them to their productions.” Each and every entry in the new Serafine Collection DVDs has been organized and tagged for highly efficient searchability and usability. In “Industrials”, for example, the filename “ComputerDiscDriveStartLoud” is matched to the keywords “computer disc drive start loud” in the Soundminer metadata. “Making the naming conventions work for every category and sound was one of the biggest challenges of these new collections,” Serafine says. “But the work was worth it. Users will have an easier time than ever locating and applying the sounds from these collections.”
With these six new sets, The Serafine Collection continues to lead the way for SFX library quality, comprehensiveness and utility. “My life is guided by the question, ‘What can I record today?’” Frank Serafine says. “I’m out there capturing sounds every day, and I love passing them on to the world. With these new DVDs the list of ‘missing links’ in SFX just got shorter.”
The newest editions to the Serafine Collection are priced at: Foley $1295; HumanAnimal $995; Industrial $995; Vehicles $1295; Water $995; Sci Fi II $995.
